Sri Lanka's International Airport BIA Moves 6.4mn Passengers above the Design Capacity of 6mn

12th March 2012, www.lankabusinessonline.com

Passenger movements through Sri Lanka's main international airport rose to 6.4 million above its design capacity of 6 million passengers, and the state-run agency was scrambling to add capacity, an official said.

Last year, according to the agency's annual report, the international airport at Katunayake handled 5.259 million passengers indicating an increase of 21 percent.

Chairman of the state airport agency, Sri Lanka Airport and Aviation Services Ltd, Prasanna Wickramasuriya told a forum organized by Sri Lanka's shipping academy that the airport handled 208,000 metric tonnes of cargo, up from 187,000 tonnes a year earlier.

The airport can handle 250,000 metric tonnes of cargo a year.

The airport can accommodated 25 airside movements an hour. The airport has been experiencing congestion especially at so-called 'hub peaks'.

Tourist arrivals have been growing over 30 percent a year since a 30-year war ended in 2009.

Thirty three airlines now call at Colombo.

"Day-by-day the enthusiasm is more and other airlines wants to fly into Sri Lanka," Wickramasuriya said.

Wickramasuriya said capacity will be upped by a million passengers a year.

The airport was building a one million passenger domestic terminal to be completed by the end of the year. But it will initially used for international traffic, he said.

Private jet movements had also increased 27 percent, making it difficult to accommodate them, he said. They will be shifted to small airport at Ratmalana, south of the capital Colombo he said.

The airport firm had signed up a loan from Japan to up passenger capacity to 12 million and cargo to 510,000 by 2015, he said.

Sri Lanka one-million-passenger second international airport in Hambantota is also expected to be completed by end 2012 or the first quarter of 2013.

Thai AirAsia, Low Fare Airline, Flies to Sri Lanka

02nd March 2012, www.dailynews.lk, By Shirajiv Sirimane

AirAsia, the World’s best Low-Cost Airline, celebrates their inaugural flights from Colombo to Bangkok yesterday.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, “We are very excited to open up a world of opportunities for people to shop, sight-see, and experience all the flavors that Thailand has to offer, at a very affordable price. “Since tickets for this route went on sale on 4 January 2012, we have received tremendous positive feedback and we are very pleased to see that there is much demand for travel between the two cities”.

He said that they are currently operating on a 70% load factor and this would increase to 80% soon.

“As a low-cost carrier to fly to Sri Lanka, AirAsia is committed to offering the best fares on our brand-new Airbus A320 planes”. Bijleveld also believes that this new route will bring in a surge of visitors and business people from Thailand which will significantly stimulate Sri-Lanka’s travel industry. “Many Thai Buddhists love to visit Sri Lanka’s temples and religious sites during their Buddhist pilgrimage. We look forward to promoting such a beautiful destination along with the country’s UNESCO World Heritage sites”, said the CEO.

Currently around 50, 000 Sri Lankans travel to Thailand and only 5,000 fly from Thailand to Sri Lanka. “With AirAsia this gap would narrow,” he said.

Asked why they were late to include Colombo to their radar he said that it was because they first wanted to concentrate on domestic, China and India.

On the other hand, Bangkok’s temples, colorful night life, and mouth-watering cuisine is now within everyone’s reach and budget, thanks to AirAsia’s daily flights. The 180-seat Airbus A320 has leather seats and a variety of in-flight meals to choose from.

Apart from Bangkok, AirAsia’s connectivity extends to other destinations in Thailand that passengers can easily connect to from Bangkok including world-famous beach destinations such as Phuket or the charming city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Thai AirAsia currently flies to 12 destinations within Thailand and 16 international destinations from Bangkok including Singapore, Bali, Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzen, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, Chennai, Chongqing, Colombo, Kolkata, Yangon, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia, the leading and largest low-cost carrier in Asia, services the most extensive network with approximately 139 routes. Within 10 years of operations, AirAsia has carried over 100 million guests and grown its fleet from just two aircraft to approximately 106.

The airline today is proud to be a truly ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) airline with established operations based in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines servicing a network stretching across all ASEAN countries, China, India, Sri Lanka and Australia.

Sri Lanka's Expo Aviation Recommences Flights to Jaffna

22nd January 2012, www.lankabusinessonline.com

Sri Lanka's Expo Aviation will recommence twice daily flights to Jaffna in Sri Lanka's north using a 12-seater Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft, a media report said.

Sri Lanka's The Sunday Times newspaper quoted Expo Aviation managing director Seraj Mohammed as saying that demand is seen picking up. The firm was awaiting clearance from civil aviation authorities to start flights.

Expo Aviation used larger 52-seater aircraft for scheduled flights between Colombo and Jaffna during the island's long-running civil war when the Jaffna peninsula was cut off by land.

Demand had dropped after a land route to Jaffna via the A-9 highway was opened after the war ended. Daily demand for seats had dropped from 200 to 36 after the land route was opened, the report said.

The Sunday Times said the Cessna Grand Caravan had cost 2.6 million US dollars.

The firm may also add extra capacity if demand grows, the report said.

The minister said that an additional Rs one billion will be allocated by the government for infrastructure development in the Northern Province this year.

Colombo International Airport to Receive 6mn Passengers by 2018. New Hambantota International Airport in Southern Sri Lanka to Open for Commercial Flights from November

18th January 2012, www.dailynews.lk, By Shirajiv Sirimane

The Colombo International Airport would be upgraded to cater for six million passengers by 2018. This is a 100 percent increase.

Airport Aviation Services Chairman Col. Prasanna Wickramasuriya said that this includes over one million passengers using the Hambantota International Airport (HJA) as well.

He also said that the HIA construction work is on track and the new airport runway testing would start from October and would be open for commercial flights form November.

“The second stage of the HIA project is to be completed by 2018,” he said.

Wickramasuriya said that initially they would target the charter operation and subsequently attract budget airlines to operate to HIA. “With tourism booming many airlines have requested for additional frequencies and we are planning to divert them to HIA,” he said.

HIA has allocated a large space for a proposed duty free shopping complex for the airport and they expect this would bring in a special ‘shopping’ clientele similar to Singapore.

He also disclosed that investors have expressed interest to set up a publishing zone in Mattala.

SriLankan Airlines will look at rerouting some of their European and Gulf flights through the Hambantota International Airport (HIA) from next November CEO, Kapila Chandrasena said.

He said that their plan is to have a stop over in HIA so that passengers could have the option of disembarking in Mattala while passengers too could take connections to Colombo.

“Similarly we are also looking at operating the Male transit market from the proposed Mattala Airport,” he said.

The national carrier will also handle the ground handling and catering services of the new airport. “The handling rates would be definitely more competitive than the Colombo Airport,” he said.

While spelling out plans to have an extension arm of their engineering wing at HIA he said that they will soon sign up to get a second A330 simulator for pilot training.

SriLankan, which is expected to strengthen their air taxi services with two additional aircraft, is to build an air taxi hub in Bandagirlya Tank in Mattala. This would be a five-minute drive from the HIA and a four-lane highway would connect it to the airport.

"Widely acknowledged as the market leader, the airline has a strong pipeline of new business bolstered by the entry of Millennium Aero," the company said in a statement.

The airline says it plans to commence daily scheduled operations to Jaffna this year and is also looking at international operations out of the Katunayake airport and Mattala.

"Deccan India can be very proud of the role they played in re-starting the domestic aviation industry in 2004 after it had been suspended for security reasons in 1995. We thank them for the pioneering role they have played in the emergence of domestic aviation in the country," the statement quoted Mr Mirchandani as saying.

SriLankan Airlines Air Taxi Offers Bird's Eye View of Sri Lanka's Scenic Beauty

24th July 2011, www.sundayobserver.lk, By Lalin Fernandopulle

Do you want a bird's eye view of Sri Lanka's plush green land and the scenic beauty of beaches? A cruise on SriLankan Airlines air taxi will provide that unique experience. A journey on a bright sunny day provides a clear view of the panoramic diversity of the country.

A traveller could reach his destination without any hassle within half an hour on a air taxi that flies to 12 key locations from Colombo. The flight takes off from the Kelaniya River from a location adjacent to a historic temple in Peliyagoda.

Manager Product Development, Commercial Division, Airline Centre, SriLankan Airlines, Sanjeeva Jayatileke said that locations and landing spots have been identified to operate domestic flights.

"We hope to retain the location at Peliyagoda while considering the Beira Lake as an alternative spot for landing and take off", he said.

The air taxi flies to Bentota three days a week. Plans are afoot to increase the number of flights to the South.

The 17-seater air taxi operates flights to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Bentota, Koggala,Dickwella, Tissamaharama, Hambantota, Arugam Bay, Passikuda, Trincomalee and Jaffna.

He said they hope to resume flights to Nuwara Eliya which have been suspended due to bad weather.

There is a big demand for flights to Nuwara Eliya which is the most preferred location among tourists. We have identified two locations in Kandy and hope to operate flights on a daily basis.

Jayatileke said that there are more tourists today in hotels due to the air taxi which flies to 12 key locations on a daily basis.

"We hope to issue tickets at the dockside for the convenience of travellers and facilitate a speedy service", he said.

"Dambulla is the latest addition to the locations of the domestic flight operation. Plans are afoot to launch charter flights to Passikuda, Arugam Bay and Jaffna this year", a SriLankan Airlines official said.

He said plans are under way to launch charter flights to Tissamaharamaya and Ampara. "We are looking at launching a flight to Castlereigh soon."

The speciality of the air taxi operations is that a traveller could reach his or her destination within an hour.

The tourism industry has been anxiously anticipating the resumption of domestic air flights which provides a turbo boost to the travel industry.

The sea plane operation will help promote the destination and support the endeavour of the tourism industry to reach the target of attracting 2.5 million visitors by 2015.

The sea plane operation in Sri Lanka resumed late last year following a temporary suspension in 2008 for security reasons.

"There is a tremendous demand for domestic air flights which ward off the hassle of a long cumbersome journey by road.

We hope to raise the standard of service to international level which would woo more travellers to the country", Jayatileke said.

SriLankan Airlines hopes to develop a sea plane airstrip at Ja-ela shortly to facilitate a quick transit to any key location in the country.

"We hope to introduce more aircraft, increase the number of flights, pilots and stewards to offer a unique service.

The airline has commenced training airforce pilots who will be absorbed to the operations soon", Jayatileke said.

SriLankan Airlines currently operates two aircraft from Kennborek Calgery, Canada on a two-year wet lease agreement which will expire in December 2012.

The original plan, to commence operations from the Negombo lagoon came to a halt due to opposition from the fisherfolk in the area. The project was opposed due to adverse environmental impact envisaged by operating, sea planes, on marine life.

"We have obtained clearance from the Central Environmental Authority to operate flights at 12 locations which we hope to increase it to 20 this year. Steps have been taken to ensure that there is no adverse impact on the environment", an official said.

Sea plane operations have given a new dimension to tourism in Sri Lanka which has revived rapidly since the dawn of peace.

It will entice more tourists to the country which has a host of attractions to offer the traveller.

The air taxi service is still not a profit making venture though there is much hype about domestic flights.

"We hope to turn the operations into a profitable venture by introducing more services to attract tourists", a SriLankan Airlines official said.

Flight Operations Administration and Technical, Project Manager, Safety and Quality Auditor, SriLankan Airlines, Pulasthi Jayasinha said that the air taxi service has a value to transportation and added that float planes will be a boost to develop the tourism industry.

The water level in reservoirs is a vital factor to operate sea planes which require a 4000 feet runway and four feet depth to berth.

Jayasinha said that the dawn to dusk operation of the air taxi service will be manned by professional local crew who will offer an unmatched service to passengers.

The air taxi flights are manned by a Canadian crew. "It is exciting to be in Sri Lanka and we enjoy every bit of the stay in the country. We will offer our best service to promote tourism in Sri Lanka," a crew member said.

The sea plane is a popular mode of transportation in many tourist destinations.
