Altair, Sri Lanka’s Tallest Luxury Condominium, Construction Underway. Unique Tower Blocks Feature One Leaning on to the Other

03rd April 2013, www.island.lk

Construction work on Altair, Sri Lanka’s tallest luxury condominium, is on track with the completion of 100 of 288 piles targeted for March 2013, INDOCEAN Developers, the promoter of the iconic project said.

Announcing the milestone, the company said the four test piles, carried out at the Sir James Peiris Mawatha site overlooking the Beira Lake at 200 per cent of the design load, showed that each pile can successfully bear a load of 2,200 tons, which is twice the load required by the structural design.

"This kind of project demands vision, strength and determination," said Sushil Mohta, Director of INDOCEAN Developers (private) Ltd., who visited the site during the piling. "It’s about testing oneself, always pushing to the limit. That is why INDOCEAN went out and tested the piles to twice their designed capacity."

The Altair team that inspected the site also comprised of Directors Jugal Khetawat and Pradeep Sureka, the Structural Engineer Predrag Eror and the Vice President – Projects Iraklis Andreakis. "The structural integrity of all our projects is paramount among our values," Pradeep Sureka said.

INDOCEAN Director Jugal Khetawat added: "We recently completed Wind Tunnel Tests for Altair in London by the wind-engineering experts RWDI whose project portfolio includes the tallest buildings in the world, the Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and Petronas Tower."

Altair’s 288 driven piles will be connected to a raft foundation so as to distribute the building loads. The Piling Contractor for the project is San Piling, a sister company of the leading construction company Sanken Lanka. Piling work is expected to be complete by June this year.

Comprising of two tower blocks, one of which leans on to the other, Altair, with an address of 127, Sir James Peiris Mawatha, will rise to 68 stories, offering its 410 apartments spectacular views of the Beira Lake and the Indian Ocean. The building has been designed by the globally recognized celebrity architect Moshe Safdie. Besides its 1.5 million square feet of high-end eco-friendly living space, the development will also offer 40,000 square feet of up-market retail space.

INDOCEAN is a venture of South City Group, which brings together over 150 years of cumulative development experience. The Group has, till date, completed 10 million square feet of real estate developments worth more than USD 350 million and currently has 20 million square feet of space worth USD 1.1 billion under construction.

Pioneering large-scale urban developments, with the collaboration of international consultants and development professionals, is the track record of South City Group which has pledged to deliver a superior and landmark development for Sri Lankan and expatriate residents.

Sri Lanka Made a Joint Sponsor in First Ever China South Asia Exposition (CSAEXPO) to be held in Yunnan in June 2013

29th March 2013, www.ft.lk

“We thank you for making Sri Lanka a Joint Sponsor in the first China South Asia Exposition (CSAE) to be held in Yunnan in June. We are currently working on a 150-strong Sri Lankan delegation for this forthcoming international event,” said Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen yesterday.

Bathiudeen was addressing the seven-member high profile trade delegation led by Vice Governor of Yunnan Province Ding Shaoxiang.

The first-high level Chinese team to arrive here since the appointment of China’s new Premier Li Keqiang and in less than two weeks since Keqiang’s ascension on 15 March, the delegation is also scheduled to hold meetings with several key figures of Lankan Government before it returns home.
Bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and China stood at $ 2.676 b in 2012, increasing by 19.5% from 2011. Exports to China in 2012 stood at $ 108.12 m. China has now become the largest development partner and an important investor in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, bilateral trade between Yunnan Province and Sri Lanka is now reported at $ 37 m (2012).

“We also thank China for its support towards our infrastructure development and more importantly, for giving us the second international sea port and international airport,” stressed Minister Bathiudeen. “China ranks as the third largest supplier to Sri Lanka. In 2012, China exported $ 2.56 b in goods, which is the highest in trade history, however Sri Lanka’s exports to China were only $ 108 m, about 1% of Sri Lanka’s total exports.

This shows that there is yet unrealised export potential at our end, which we can explore jointly.”
Shaoxiang said: “We also believe that there is huge trade potential between the time-honoured friends.

The Chinese Central Council has now upgraded the annual China-South Asia Trade Fair and Business Forum to China South Asia Exposition, which is no more a provincial level event but a national level event, and the first, new edition of CSAE will be held in Kunming starting 6 June. As a step in developing our trade, we invite Sri Lanka to co-sponsor the significant first CSAE in Yunnan’s capital Kunming and also invite strong Sri Lanka business participation at the concurrently held Kunming Fair. We invite Sri Lankan businesses to set up a Sri Lankan Trade Representative Office in Kunming, Yunnan’s capital, for which we have already allocated space in the Yunnan Foreign Trade Tower in Kunming Municipality. Yunnan is the closest Chinese Province to Sri Lanka and is the gateway to the rest of China.”

Shaoxiang added: “We also want to expand our entry in Sri Lanka’s infrastructure. Many Yunnan contractors are active throughout South Asia and all their projects have been commended by South Asian governments. Energy sector, especially hydropower, is a speciality of Yunnan builders. Sinohydro China’s speed in construction of Moragahakanda reservoir has already been commended by the Government of Sri Lanka. In fact, today I have brought with me both the Vice President and Director of Sinohydro Bureau in this delegation to explore more cooperation in the energy sector here.”

Sinohydro, the State-owned project contractor firm with $ 18.26 b global revenues (2011: Chinese Yuan 113.47 b), is the sixth largest construction firm in China and is ranked 23rd among top 225 global contractors, with 12 subsidiaries operating under it.

In 2011, Sinohydro had 2,541 construction contracts in 62 countries across many regions. Apart from its Chinese projects, the group’s global infrastructure project portfolio (which includes BT, BOT and PPP projects) spans across Ethiopia, Sudan, Malaysia, Laos, Qatar, Congo DR and Algeria. Sinohydro is also in real estate, investments, E&M equipment, and engineering consultancy.

During the meeting, both parties also commended the contribution of direct Sino-Lanka air-links towards the development business to business contacts between both economies.

Also present during the meeting were Ministry of Industry and Commerce Secretary Anura Siriwardene, top officials of the Ministry, the EDB, and the Department of Commerce.

Etisalat Launches Sri Lanka's First e-Book Store for Local Publishers & Authors

16th February 2012, www.lankabusinessonline.com

Etisalat's Sri Lankan unit has teamed up with booksellers and a software firm to launch an electronic book store for local publishers and authors, officials said.

The online e-book store, called 'Book Hub' to be commercially launched by end of March, will be in all three languages and available on any telecommunications network to ensure greater accessibility.

Etisalat Wednesday signed a deal with publishers M D Gunasena to launch the electronic book store whose technology was developed by Microimage, a software firm.

"This is for all books published in Sri Lanka in all three languages - Sinhala, Tamil and English," said Etisalat chief executive Dumindra Ratnayaka.

"We hope to list as many books as possible. We've had discussions with most publishers and all are keen to list the books they publish.

"We have a very literate population, we have a passion to read. We will now able to give them books anytime, anywhere and at a lower cost. We are trying to bring smart devices to the country to suit all walks of life."

Ratnayaka said they were having talks with the education ministry to list education texts in electronic format.

"It is far easier for a child to carry a tablet to school than a load of books," he said. "It will be easier for the education ministry to update these books than printed matter.

"We will empower up and coming authors," Ratnayaka said. "One of their biggest problems is that publishers are not willing to print their work because of the cost of holding it. Now with the 'Book Hub' we can open the doors to them."

Rajiv Gunasena, deputy managing director of M D Gunasena, said the book store chain was moving with the times, having seen the extinction of well-known international book stores that did not go electronic.

"Unless publishers and book stores can marry the digital and physical books, we will become extinct," he said.

Books will be available for download on personal computers, tablet computers and smart phones by consumers first using Etisalat and then all other telecom providers.

Harsha Purasinghe, chief executive of Microimage, which built the software for the e-book store, said it was the right time to launch it given the growing popularity of smart phones and mobile computers.

"The timing is right - there are devices now."

He said the consortium will first transform books in different forms and electronic formats into a single standard called the Unicode standard which they encourage all future publishers and authors to use.

The works will then be converted for use in the e-book store and then in 'e-reader' applications.

Multiple payment options will be available including credit cards and pre-and post-paid mobile phone payment schemes to ensure widespread use of electronic books as the cost of smart phones fall.

"We want to ensure somebody really rural will be able to pay for these books," said Purasinghe.

"These devices cost is going to come down drastically. We're going to push vendors to bring this price point further down to less than 10,000 rupees. When that happens everybody would be able to afford them."

Microimage has developed its own encryption technology for digital rights management (DRM).

"This was a key concern for publishers," said Purasinghe. "We will not use standard DRM. We have written our own encryption technology so it's hard to crack for hackers."

Hirdaramani Group Invests $ 6.3mn In Asia's First Apparel Factory to Receive the Carbon Neutral Award

12th February 2012, www.nation.lk

Hirdaramani Group (HG), one of Sri Lanka’s largest apparel exporters, have invested US$ 6.3 million in their new factory ‘Mihila’ located at Agalawatte, the first apparel factory in Asia to receive the Carbon Neutral award, a senior official of the firm said. According to HG Director Aruna Kuruppu, the firm expects cost of production through the new plant would reduce by 15%- 20% monthly due to its eco-friendly construction that reduces water and energy consumption.

“This factory is also the first in Sri Lanka to receive the LEED certificate. Though this is more of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, in the long run it is going to be beneficial for the company as it will attract more customers and business partners due to this certification,” Kuruppu said.
He said, “Hirdaramani is also presently in the process of converting their factory based in Eheliyagoda as a Carbon Neutral factory, which will be completed within this year and plans to convert other factories under their holdings as Carbon Neutral in the future.”

“We have 18 companies here in Sri Lanka and two others in Vietnam and the Maldives. We will be converting each one of these in to carbon neutral factories in time to come,” Kuruppu said.
Meanwhile, Director of HG Nikhil Hirdaramani said that HG planned to invest US $5 million in opening a new factory in Vauniya in the near future, which would produce around 15, 000 pieces per day.

IMF Appoints Sharmini Coorey, a Sri Lankan, to Head the New Department Formed for Capacity Building of Member States. Ms Coorey Currently Functions as the Director of IMF Institute

23rd January 2012, www.imf.org, Press Release No. 12/20

The International Monetary Fund announced today the creation of a new department focused on helping member states build capacity and develop their key economic and financial institutions. The new department will be formed by merging the IMF Institute and the Office of Technical Assistance Management, enabling stronger synergies between technical assistance and training to better reflect country priorities, facilitate fund raising, and benefit from economies of scale. The decision, which will entail no additional budget costs, follows a discussion by the Executive Board in November 2011 of a Report of the Task Force on the Fund’s Technical Assistance Strategy. It is expected that the new department will begin operating in May 2012.

“We appreciate the high value that member countries place on the technical assistance and training the Fund provides, and we intend to preserve and build on the strengths of both,” IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said. “This new department will allow us to improve our institutional development and capacity-building activities to help our members meet the economic challenges of a complex and fast-changing world,” Ms. Lagarde added.

The new department will be headed by Ms. Sharmini Coorey, who is currently Director of the IMF Institute (see Press Release No. 11/468).

The new department will be responsible for:

• Defining an institutional development and capacity-building strategy for the Fund—in consultation with other departments—and updating it over time in response to the evolving needs of Fund members.

• Coordinating the provision of technical assistance and training across departments, with the aim of ensuring that these activities are driven by member country demand, focused on the Fund’s core macro (economic and financial) mandate, and integrated with its surveillance and program responsibilities.

• Designing and delivering, in cooperation with other departments, training that reflects member countries’ and Fund staff’s needs.

• Enhancing partnerships with donors and other key stakeholders to underscore that the Fund is modernizing and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of its institutional development and capacity-building activities. Designing and coordinating processes for evaluating the effectiveness of technical assistance and training will be important in this regard.

• Ensuring that the network of regional training and technical assistance centers is efficiently managed with a view to building a global network of capacity-building centers over the medium-term.

• Reporting to and seeking strategic guidance from the Board through periodic reviews of the Fund’s technical assistance and training.

Gallivanter’s Guide 2011 Awards for Excellence is the 21st annual readers’ poll and is a guide to the world’s greatest hotels divided up by category. The list features annually in the January issue of Gallivanter’s Guide and is selected by readers who vote on the various categories.

Among the 18 categories adjudged are the Best City Hotel Worldwide, Best Leisure Resort Worldwide, Best Hotel Group Worldwide, Best European City Hotel, Best European Resort, Best Resort in India & The Indian Ocean, Best Hotel/Resort in Asia, Best City Hotel in North America, Best Resort in North America, Best Small Hotel/Resort Under 100 Rooms, Best Hotel/Resort Cuisine Worldwide. There are also awards for the Best General Manager Worldwide, Editor’s choice award and the best Airlines.

Four Seasons Hotels have received awards in 15 of the 18 categories and emerged as the leading Hotel chain in the world. In the category of the Best City Worldwide, the Best European City Hotel, the Best Hotel/Resort in Central and South America and the Best Hotel Hotel/Resort Cuisine Worldwide, Four Seasons emerged as number one. The Four Seasons Hotel in London at Park Lane received the Editor’s Choice Award Worldwide.

36-year old Sanjiv Hulugalle,General Manager of the Four Seasons Hotel Kuda Huraa in the Maldives has been adjudged third under the category the Best General Manager Worldwide. In the citation accompanying the award, the Editors state "Sanjiv Hulugalle enters the list for the first time; another exceptional GM who has looked after many of you personally."

Hulugalle worked as a ride attendant of the Big Dipper in an amusement park in Sydney to help fund his degree in Physical Education in the 1990s. From there he joined Four Seasons as a health club attendant. "Up to that point, I dreamed of running my own gym," Hulugalle recalls, "but I was soon fired up by the unique Four Seasons service culture: little things like how to bring a smile to a face with simple interactions and awareness."

Hulugalle maintains that team work is vital in building the correct ambience in a Hotel "For any hotel team to make its guests feel special, that team has to feel special first; Four Seasons does that. Now it’s my job to make sure that every single member of the team feels happy and appreciated, too."

Hulugalle’s formal education ran from Sri Lanka to India to Australia, and then a long journey to Kuda Huraa in the Maldives as General Manager.  He is inspired by the realization that learning never ends and that there is no substitute for hard work and attention to detail. "As long as there is a single guest on the island, my mind will be on the job," he admits. And if his team is anything to go by, they’ll be the happiest guests in the Maldives. Hulugalle leaves the Maldives to take up an appointment in Beijing at the end of January 2012.

From the time he joined Four Seasons in 1996, he has worked in the Hotel chain in Goa, Las Vegas, Toronto, Vancouver, Langkawi in Malaysia, and Damascus. He had also short spells in Sharm El Sheik, Amman, Prague and Great Exuma.

Hulugalle maintains that to sustain a high momentum in one’s work, a strong family life is essential. Hulugalle looks to his wife, Alice, and his two daughters, Catherine and Savannah, for his own extracurricular happiness, from cooking up a gourmet feast after a day spent fishing to playing golf with Alice in Colombo. "She has a handicap of six," he says proudly. "I’m not as good, but what I lack in skill I more than make up for in competitiveness!"

Sri Lanka boasts more names than there are grains of rice in a paddy – Ceylon (British colonial name, dropped in 1972), Serendip (from the Persian fairytale "The Three Princes of Serendib," employed by Horace Walpole to coin the word "serendipity" in 1754), Taprobanê, Pa-Outchow ("isle of gems" in Chinese), and many, many more.

Sri Lanka is a never-never land, a phantasmagoria, a mythosphere. Dangling like a teardrop off the southeast coast of India, only slightly larger than West Virginia, she crowds into her space primeval jungles where leopards  lurk; swatches of arid desert; wide beaches both boutique-chic in Bentota and Galle and business-bustle in Trincomalee; hill country where brilliant green tea estates stun the eye.

Around Ratnapura, precious gems hide in water-filled alluvial pits in the shadows of 7,360-foot Adam’s Peak, a point holy to four religions: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Muslim. Each cites the footprint impressed on a boulder at the  summit. Was it made by Adam as the Muslims say, or by Gautama Buddha or by Lord Shiva during a dance or by St. Thomas the Apostle, as Roman Catholics believe? I know only that more yellow butterflies flutter there than anywhere on earth and that the greeting most uttered by pilgrims along the trails to the top is "karunavai": peace.

Rocks that rose from the ocean in Mesozoic times (150 million years ago, perhaps), brought to the commerce of antiquity a generosity of gems  plucked from the dreams of the Queen of Sheba and Cleopatra,  Elizabeth Taylor and Catherine the Great: rubies, alexandrites, aquamarines, amethysts, tourmalines, cat’s eyes, garnets, zircons, and sapphires, always sapphires, including the 400-carat Blue Belle that adorns the British Crown.

Somewhere in childhood we became enchanted with the ruins of Greece and Rome, of India and of Egypt. Of Ceylon-Sri Lanka we are ignorant. Our books say nothing of Anuradhapura, of Polonnaruwa or Mihintale or Sigiriya. These have the unfinished, random, insubstantial qualities of dreams. Unlike in Pompei or Ephesus, the only structures deserving to endure were those dedicated to the Buddha. Wood and clay sufficed for profane places, houses and shops and arenas which have by now been swallowed by the earth.

Human settlement began in Anuradhapura, the ancient capital, in about 500 B.C.E.  In the annals of monumental masonry, the ruins rank second only to the pyramids of Egypt. The king dwelt in a bejeweled palace of 1,000 chambers, but when the city fell in the 10th century, only the holy Bo tree, the Sri Maha Bodhi, was supported as the relic of past splendors. In its shade, Buddha himself gained enlightenment. Attacked by a bad blight in 1950, it was saved by wizards from the Smithsonian Institution.

Anuradhapura is nearly inexhaustible. Do not miss the Jetavanarama, most massive earthmound of its kind on earth. Bulging atop eight acres, it is larger than all but two of Egypt’s pyramids. Just 32 miles away, the Aukana Buddha  stands four stories tall. His name means "sun-eating." Visit him at dawn.

Anuradhapura endured for 1,400 years through the reigns of 123 kings. Her successor, Polonnaruwa, lasted for two centuries (the 11th to 13th) and a dozen rulers. Its centerpiece, the Terrace of the Tooth Relic or, more simply, The Quadrangle, a grouping of 12 superb structures, stands in the center of the city. The huge "tank" or irrigation lake that served as lifeblood was constructed by a thousand men working 24 hours a day for at least 12 years.

Of all the prodigious artworks of Polonnaruwa, the four 12th-century sculptures known as the Gal Vihara will most startle your senses. Who first imagined attacking a wall of granite with a chisel (?) and "releasing"  (previewing Michelangelo) the spirits of Buddha that lived within the stone? One poses proudly, his arms crossed, his expression calm, his body relaxed, standing 23 feet tall. (In fact, this is not Buddha but a favorite disciple, Ananda).

Near Ananda, a 46-foot Buddha reclines, entering into the state of parinibbana, relinquishing human existence and blissfully entering  Enlightenment. (Nibbana we know as nirvana.) His head depresses his pillow slightly; his form as serenely undisturbed as it has remained for nine centuries. When he awakes, we will have passed beyond time.

And now we leave? Not before we have beheld the stupendous red stone monolith that soars 600 feet out of densely green scrub jungle into the high blue of sky. This is the Citadel of Sigiriya, a rocky fortress crowned by a fabled palace that presided here 16 centuries ago – and endured for only 18 years. Its ruins stretch across the bulk of Lion Rock; the site settles into the memory with all the mystery of myth. Once a pilgrim had to ascend through the stony jaws and throat ("giriya") of a lion ("sinha"), whose shape was sculpted halfway up the monolith.

Today, you mount a stairway between gigantic paws with terrifying toenails. Within a grotto on the western face, bare-breasted maidens smile and frolic; Asia’s oldest landscape gardens survive as do lovely ponds, rippled by a lazy breeze. Hold your breath. Nothing in "Star Wars" surpasses Sigiriya.

Sri Lanka, One of Top Five Destinations to Visit in 2012 - Condé Nast Traveler, A Leading Travel Mag in Britain

01st January 2012, www.adaderana.lk

A leading travel magazine in Britain “Condé Nast Traveller” has nominated Sri Lanka as one of the top five destinations to watch in year 2012.

The travel experts of the magazine predict that Sri Lanka will be among the hottest new holiday destinations for the travelers in the coming year.

Unvailing the list of destinations the magazine reveals that “One of the great joys of travel is the feeling you’ve discovered somewhere special, somewhere that’s all yours, for the first time - before the developers move in and the crowds descend. It could be a new and unexplored region, like the Arctic Circle, or an entire country that has been off-limits to tourists for political reasons, such as Sri Lanka and Burma.”

Sri Lanka has been placed third in the list of destinations ahead of Britain, Australia, Abu-Dhabi .

Tag-lining Sri Lanka as “The coasts less travelled” the writer remarks that ”Although the north and east coasts are undeveloped, their natural beauty is unspoiled. You can find yourself the only tourist in the traditional villages, and the only person on some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Indeed, those beaches on the east coast have fine sand and calm, clear waters, unlike the surf destinations on the west. This does, of course, mean top-class accommodation is still limited - but for many, finding charming guesthouses or rustic beach huts is all part of the adventure; and being first to discover a place never loses its thrill.”

Sri Lanka Tourism has recorded the highest ever arrivals to the country in 2011 and targets 2.5 million tourist by year 2016.

Fitch and Moody's Upgrade Sri Lanka's Sovereign Rating due to Key Factors

24th July 2011, www.sundayobserver.lk

Fitch Ratings has upgraded Sri Lanka's Long-Term Foreign and Local Currency Issuer Default Ratings (IDRs) to 'BB-' from 'B+'. The outlooks on these ratings are 'Stable'.

Further, Fitch has upgraded the Country Ceiling to 'BB-' from 'B+' and affirmed the Short-Term Foreign-Currency IDR at 'B'.

Meanwhile, Moody's Investors Service has upgraded outlook of Sri Lanka's B1 foreign currency sovereign rating from 'Stable' to 'Positive' due to the key factors - increasingly evident peace dividend reflected in greater macroeconomic and financial stability; policy orientation of fiscal reform and economic growth, supported by a successful IMF program; improving external payments position; and reduction in political event risk following the end of terrorism in 2009.

Fitch's decision to upgrade the ratings was based on the stabilis ation and recovery of the economy and increased efforts by the Government to bring down the budget deficit.

Moody's has said that augmented investor confidence and the increase in investments along with the falling inflation, the economy is expected to expand sustainably by 8-9 percent in the medium term.

The Central Bank has welcomed the upgrade and is confident that the measures taken towards macroeconomic stability and economic improvement would yield further favourable results.

Yala is God’s Patch of Land for Leopards Says World Renowned Wildlife Celebrities Jonathan & Angelina Scott of Sri Lanka's Yala National Park

21st July 2011, www.ft.lk

“If ever God created a patch of land for the leopards in this world, it must be Yala National Park in Sri Lanka” said the world renowned wild life celebrities Jonathan and Angelina Scott addressing the audience at a special event held to present their work on leopards at Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel on 09th July. Expressing their views on this Jonathan and Angie Scott further said that “In other wild life parks around the world, leopards are under the threat from predators like Lions and hyenas. But in Sri Lanka they don’t face such situation, they are free to move about and more secured in the wild than other leopards in the world “.

Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park is recognized of having one of the highest densities of leopard population in the world and this comment made by Jonathan and Angelina is certainly going to compliment this position held by the national park.

The two celebrities were touring in Sri Lanka for the first time and spent twelve days experience the Local culture, rich history and heritage of Sri Lanka and studying the Leopards of Sri Lanka at the Yala National park. Lead by the Head of Wild Life Tourism for John Keells Hotels Chitral Jayatilake and the Nature Trails team, Jonathan and Angela were able to make seventeen sightings of leopards in Yala and captured tremendous images of their behavior in the wild, which is said to be one of the best collection of leopard photographs ever taken in their natural environment. These photographs will no doubt showcase the most sought after animal of Sri Lanka in the wild as one of Sri Lanka’s tourism icons to the world.

Jonathan and Angie Scott live in Kenya in Africa and spend much of their time in the company of African wildlife. Their wildlife photography, wildlife pencil drawings, and wildlife books have won awards and recognition for their work throughout the world.

Big cats have been the focus of much of Jonathan and Angie’s work and the basis for a number of books including three titles accompanying the hugely popular BBC television series Big Cat Diary or Big Cat Week that Jonathan co-presents.

Angie takes the production stills for the series and is a game spotter.

John Keells Hotels together with Nations Trust Bank and American Express have organized the special event held for Jonathan & Angie Scott to present their work at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo and share with the audience their latest film, shot in Africa about the secret leopard.

First Ever Census of Elephants in Sri Lanka to Help Protect the Endangered Species against the Loss of Habitat

13th July 2011, in.news.yahoo.com, By Bharatha Mallawarachi - Associated Press

Sri Lanka is preparing for its first census of elephants in the island's forests to help protect the endangered species against the loss of its habitat.

The head of the Wildlife Department, Chandrawansa Pathiraja, said the census will run over two days starting on the full moon of next month, which falls on Aug. 13.

Elephants will be counted as they come to drink from water holes, reservoirs and tanks.

With the survey, Pathiraja said he hopes to find out the minimum number of elephants, distribution of the population and the composition of herds, including males, females, babies and tuskers.

It will also help the government determine whether it needs legislation to regulate the elephant population.

"The census we do can be used for many years for the policymakers and government authorities in order to prepare policies and projects aimed at conservation of elephants," Pathiraja said.

Elephants are considered sacred animals in Sri Lanka. Costumed and decorated pachyderms are used in Buddhist ceremonies as they parade through streets carrying the sacred relics of the Lord Buddha.

In the past, elephants were the country's trucks, taxis and even battle tanks.

But human encroachment and development have eaten into their habitats, and wild elephants are increasingly entering villages in search of food, rampaging through houses and destroying crops and killing people.

Around 250 elephants are killed every year, mostly by farmers. About 50 people are killed in elephant attacks each year too.

The only count available now dates back a century when an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 elephants roamed wild in Sri Lanka. But habitat loss and poaching are believed to have roughly halved their numbers.

Wildlife officials estimate Sri Lanka's elephant population at between 5,000 to 6,000.

Previous head counts by the Wildlife Department were confined only to certain regions and in 1993, one such census found 1,967 elephants but it excluded the island's north and east where a civil war was raging at the time.

With the war's end in 2009, wildlife officials have gained access to the former war zones. The Wildlife Department has already opened up some parks that were closed down during the quarter-century strife.
