India’s budget airline “Spice Jet” is planning to start operations to Sri Lanka, says the Civil Aviation Authority.

The Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority H.M.C. Nimalsiri speaking to www.news360.lk said “they have indicated their willingness to us”, however he said no formal request has come forward in this regard from the airline.

He also said, several other airlines also have shown interest, but none of them have made any formal request to facilitate such a move.

British Airways is one such operator.

Officials say Sri Lanka’s airline industry is showing strong signs of revival following the end of the civil conflict in May 2009.

Since the defeat of the LTTE by the armed forces, 4 new international airlines started operations to Sri Lanka.

Air Asia, Fly Dubai, Oman Air and Indian Express are those airlines.

Air Asia and Indian Express operates daily flights to Colombo and Oman Air operates 3 times per week.

Vice Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Authority Kamal S. Ratwatte said as of now 23 airlines are landing at the Katunayake Airport.

He also said, currently the BIA airport terminal caters to 4.2 million passengers per annum and very soon this figure will reach the 6 million mark.
