Sri Lanka June Tourist Arrivals up 48pct

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka rose 47.9 percent to 44,730 in June 2010 from a year earlier, with strong growth from South Asia, Western Europe and North American, data from the island's tourism office showed.

In June arrivals from Western Europe rose 36.6 percent to 13,881 in the off-peak season. The UK sent 6,262 visitors in June, up 6.4 percent and Germany sent 1,880 tourists, up 64.7 percent.

Norwegian arrivals were up 413 percent to 847 arrivals, while French arrivals were up 115 percent to 1,481, tourism data showed.

Eastern Europe generated 1,022 tourists, up 41.4 percent with Russian arrivals up 64 percent to 413.

Holiday makers from North America, another non-traditional market rose 85.5 percent to 3,998. USA and Canada also has a large Sri Lanka migrant community.

Arrivals from the Middle East were up 104.6 percent to 2,506, and East Asia up 44.1 percent to 5,172.

Visitors from South Asia were up 44 percent to 15,090. India generated 10,589 tourists, up 73 percent, Maldives 3,261, down 4.8 percent and Pakistan 943, up 34 percent.

Australia generated 2,556 visitors, up 62 percent.

In the four months to June arrivals were up 48.4 percent to 278,652 from a year earlier.

Sri Lanka has seen a revival in tourism after a 30-year war ended in May 2009.
