Strong US Demand for Sri Lanka Apparels. Weak Europe and Domestic Conditions in China Favour Sri Lanka

09th March 2012, www.lankabusinessonline.com, By Jayantha Kovilagodage

Demand from the United States for apparels would be strong this year, though Europe may be weak and domestic conditions in China, a key competitor favoured Sri Lanka, a top industry official said.

"I am of the view that the American market is beginning to pick up," Mahesh Amalean, head of MAS Holdings, a top apparel exporting group said.

"There is labor shortage in China, in the areas where appeals are manufactured."

He said capacity in China is also being utilized to cater to the local market, which is increasingly becoming more prosperous.

"Because of all those reasons, countries like Bangladesh , Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Indonesia are now busy," Amalean said.

"And I believe you will see growth. Like we saw last year, you will see growth this year, and next year as well."

China's Renminbi has risen from 8.2 yuan to the dollar in 2000 to 6.2 now, pushing real wages up, poverty down and forcing firms to increase labour productivity.

Analysts say currency depreciation, which destroys the real value of salaries wage earners, pensions of old people and lifetime financial savings of everyone is the principle tool through which a state impoverishes citizens.

Competitive currency depreciation began during the great depression and was institutionalized as a policy tool partly after the interventionist administration of Franklin Roosevelt depreciated the US currency from 20 to an ounce of gold to 35.

Amalean said Europe is expected to be stagnant, but exporters had done well despite the loss of trade preferences.

In 2011 Sri Lanka's apparel exports rose 24.6 percent to 4.2 billion rupees, while exports overall rose 22.4 percent to 10.4 billion rupees.

Sri Lanka's Export Development Board has said that exports to the US, which make up 20 percent of the total, rose 26 percent. Exports to the UK, which made up 11 percent of the total, rose 12.4 percent.

The European Union took up 34 percent of all exports.

Sri Lanka, A Good Place to Invest - IESC Vice President. Higher Returns on Investments Compared to the United States

05th February 2012, www.sundayobserver.lk, By Lalin Fernandopulle

Sri Lanka is a good place to invest as returns on investments are high compared to the United States said International Executive Services Corp (IESC) of USA Vice President Charles Conconi at a ceremony to ink a partnership between IESC and the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) to promote foreign direct investment from USA.

He said Sri Lanka’s infrastructure development is conducive to invest and added that IESC will encourage US businessmen to invest in Sri Lanka. Foreign direct investment inflows exceeded its target of$ 1b last year as there was an influx of investment in the tourism sector.

The FDI reached $ 1.07 b by December 2011 and the Government targets $1.75 b investments this year. Sri Lanka received 236 million US dollars in foreign direct investments in the first quarter of 2011.

Tourism apparels and the IT sector were among the key contribution to the growth.

Conconi said the new initiative will help Western economies to focus on Asian supply chains which have expanded operations due to the global demand.

The landmark agreement will boost US FDIs to Sri Lanka which are vital to enhance productivity and economic growth.

IESC is a loan originator for the Enterprise Development (EDN) , a program sponsored by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), an agency of the United States government. OPIC works with the US private sector and helps businesses to gain a foothold, in emerging markets catalysing revenues, jobs and growth opportunities in countries. AmCham President Vijaya Ratnayake said that the critical challenge for Sri Lanka is to increase FDIs to boost productivity and economic development.

“Sri Lanka is targeting an eight percent economic growth rate this year for which an investment growth of 35 percent of the GDP is essential”, Ratnayake said.

The economic growth forecast of 8.3 percent this year was lowered to 8 percent given the slow global economic growth expected this year.

OPIC provides investors with financing, guarantees, political risk insurance and support for private equity investment funds. The Corporation will finance up to US$ 250 million for projects in Sri Lanka. Ratnayake said the SME sector will be a key beneficiary of the partnership.

Political risk insurance for currency iinconvertibility expropriation and political violence for assets and business income are some of the services offered by OPIC.

Sri Lanka's Post War Growth Motivates US Investment & Trade between the Two Countries

19th January 2012, www.news.lk

US Department of Commerce Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa, the Middle East and South Asia has said that the impressive economic growth in post-war Sri Lanka was “exciting” and it is motivating the US Department of Commerce to urge their companies to invest in the country and diversify trade between the two nations.

She has said that the United States is taking a more regional approach to increase ties and they hope to identify specific opportunities during the mega Expo 2012 that Sri Lanka is organising in March 2012.  She has said that the United States is optimistic of the Sri Lankan government’s moves to increase its rankings in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Rankings.

Ms. Vineyard has disclosed that on the sidelines of the Expo the latest round of Trade and Investment Framework Agreement talks between the US and Sri Lanka will be held to formulate policies. She has pointed out that US investment in the booming tourism industry did come up during her meetings with officials including the Board of Investment and that it was possible to explore prospects of franchising with global brands.

She has also pointed out that last year Sri Lanka attracted over US$ 1 billion in Foreign Direct Investment, which is extremely good and an indication of how global investors perceive the country. She has also said that when there is more and more trade there will be more and more issues to deal with and it is very important to have a partner willing to talk and resolve them, and Sri Lanka has always been such a partner and that is very positive.

Referring to China’s involvement with Sri Lanka Ms. Vineyard has said that US companies welcome competition from anywhere when there is a level playing field, and has called on authorities to consider the lifespan of projects and stressed that in terms of long term dependability and return US companies have a solid record.

A delegation of 14 companies is travelling to India next month and Ms. Vineyard expects them to explore Sri Lanka’s harbours as investment options as well.
