Sri Lanka Expands Cashew Cultivation. Cashew Corporation Distributes Cashew Plants in Moneragala District

The Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation has taken measures to develop cashew cultivation in the Moneragala district, Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation Monaragala District assistant divisional manager L D Pathiranage said.

The cashew plants are to be distributed under the Divi Neguma National Development Project which is monitored by the Economic Development Ministry under the guidance of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Plans are underway to distribute around 10,621 cashew plants among residents in Moneragala district, Pathiranage said.

Over 95 percent of cashew plants have already been distributed in Thanamalvila, Wellawaya, Buththala, Kataragama, Madagama and Badalkumbura.

Arrangements are also being made to distribute around 28,000 cashew plants under an agricultural subsidy programme. Cashew will be cultivated in a 350 acre land.

"The Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation has obtained plants from its bud plant nursery in Kumbukkana, Moneragala.

"The Cashew Corporation had distributed 16,000 cashew plants from its Kumbukkana nursery," Pathiranage added.

Plans have been drawn to promote Cashew cultivation in hundreds of acres in the East.

The East is experiencing a resurgence following the elimination of terrorism. While the people are returning to their normal livelihoods with the strength extended by the Government, new cultivations are also being launched in the area.

Many fallow lands are being utilized for cashew cultivation. Another 600 acres selected under the cultivation drive of the Government are also coming under Cashew cultivation. This would improve the economy of the farmers in the East.
