The A-9 highway was yesterday opened to the public on a special directive by President Mahinda Rajapakse, Governor of the Northern Province G.A Chandrasiri said.
This follows a lengthy discussion held between the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Governor Chandrasiri to have the A-9 highway open to the public.
People from all parts of the country, and the transportation of the goods could now proceed to and fro commenced today on this highway.
Any Sri Lankan using this highway will only have to produce the National identity card, the passport or the driving license. Buses plying to Jaffna will be subjected to normal security checks by the Defence , Public Security, Law and Peace Ministries.
The LTTE on 11th August 2006 attacked the Muhamalai entry point and close down the A-9 highway. Government Troops wiped out the LTTE completely to restore this highway.
The Governor took steps in July this year to increase the fleet of buses plying on the A-9 high way to Vavuniya.
The SLTB commenced direct buses from Colombo to Jaffna yesterday.
