Sri Lanka has launched a fleet of ‘Tourist Friendly’ tuk-tuks onto the streets of Colombo.
The introduction of 50 vehicles follows complaints from travellers that the city’s private three-wheeler drivers charge exorbitant rates. They have also been accused of reckless driving and even harassment.
The official tuk-tuks have meters so passengers can monitor the cost of their journey.
They’ve also been painted in bright colours in traditional Sri Lankan styles, bordered by a traditional ‘liyaval’ pattern.
To drive an official Tourist Development Authority tuk-tuk, drivers have to pass a special training course and ensure their vehicle meets certain environmental standards.
The tuk-tuks can be booked 24 hours a day by calling 0712 500 800 or 0772 299 299.
They will be introduced to the streets of other Sir Lankan cities over the coming months.
