Aquarama 2009: A tremendous success for ornamental fish industry

Ten professional fish breeding companies sponsored by the Export Development Board (EDB) for this year Aquarama exhibition in Singapore has won 19 awards for various fish oriented products.


Sri Lanka has entered in to the ornamental fish trade in 1950’s and is among the pioneers of the international trade. Presently more than 100 countries are involved in this industry and the Asian contribution for the trade is around 54%. Singapore is the trading hub for Asia and maintaining around 20% of the market share in the global ornamental fish trade. Singapore has gained this achievement not by producing all the varieties exported but importing fish from other countries and re exporting them to the major importing countries in the Europe and the United States. However the industry has become more competitive with most of the other Asian countries in the region and also a global component in the international trade. Under the present government policy, state has taken several initiatives such as securing new technology and providing information and incentives to small and medium scale ornamental fish breeders to penetrate into global markets. Under its program government has proposed to establish an ornamental fish export facility at Polonnaruwa to increase the present supply quantities to the export market while improving the quality of fish products.The value of aquarium fish exports has grown from USD 7.37 million in 2004 to USD 8.97 million in 2008. The sector has recorded 21.7% between years 2004 to 2008.
