Adopt a Baby Elephant to help further a worthy cause

Sri Lanka elephant is considered as an endangered species, and their survival in the natural habitat is threatened due to expansion of various human activities.

Department of Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka (DWC) has established the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawa National Park in 1995 in order to provide shelter to the orphaned and abandoned baby elephants.

In order to improve facilities at ETH, DWC has decided to seek public and private sector assistance. The launch of the Foster Parent Scheme for baby Elephants was the result.

Cost of caring for baby elephants are quite high. A monthly amount of Rs 25,000.00 (USD 217.00) is expected from the Foster Parent for each baby elephant. This will be utilized for milk and medicine for the baby elephant.

Individuals or groups can subscribe to the Foster Parent scheme and they will be entitled to have certain privileges in addition to the natural satisfaction of having subscribed to a worthy cause of preserving wild elephants in Sri Lanka.

Some of the privileges offered to Foster Parents:

  • Name the baby elephant he or she sponsors.
  • Names of the Foster parent and the baby elephant will be displayed at the ETH and DWC Head Office.
  • Use of a circuit bungalow at Udawalawa National Park for two days per year FREE of charge.
  • At the time the baby elephant is set free, the Foster Parent is given the honour of performing the Act of Setting Free.
