28% of the Differently-Abled in Sri Lanka Now in Employment

Over 28% of the differently abled (Disabled) in the country are now in employment, states the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower.

In a research conducted by the Ministry in the districts of Matale, Kurunegala, Hambanthota, Galle and Anuradhapura , it is revealed that 07% of the disabled in the areas are now being educated.

The research had also revealed that over 34% of the disabled are motionless (unable to move their limbs) where as 16% are maladjusted, the Ministry stated.

Elaborating on those physical ailments Minister of Labour Relations and Manpower Athauda Senivirathne said that a programme to recruit the disabled was now in place by the Ministry. Accordingly, a centre to find suitable jobs for the differently abled is established in Battaramulla by the Ministry. The main purpose is to increase the number of disabled employees, the Minister stressed.
