The 40th anniversary commemoration of the Libyan revolution got off to a spectacular start yesterday (01) with a colourful extravaganza in the Green Square in the city of Tripoli in Libya graced by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa with 40 other Heads of States and dignitaries.
The ceremony was described as an event lauding the achievements of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s as the heroic “knight” of the country’s revolution.
The Asian region was represented by only three Heads of States at the invitation of Libyan leader Gaddafi including the President of Sri Lanka.
A special Sri Lanka military parade representing Sri Lanka Army took part in the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Libyan revolution. A group of Sri Lankan military personnel represented Sri Lanka in the event.
Sri Lankan delegation had bilateral talks with several state leaders on the sidelines of this event including the President of Philippines and Prime Minister of Pakistan.
A special discussion will be held between the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez and Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa this afternoon focusing on several aspects with multifaceted interests.
