More Relief to the Fishing Community in Northern Sri Lanka

3rd September 2009, www.news.lk

The Government will offer more relief to the fisher community in the North. Under this programme, it is planned to revive the ice production plant and the canned fish production factory at Pesalai in Mannar after nearly two decades.

Pesale will now have five cold storage plants. The work is being carried out on the instructions of the President and under the guidance of Chief of the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa. Minister Felix Perera is also playing a major role in this task.

Minister S.M. Chandrasena visited the location to examine the ground work to revive the factory. It was in 1968 that the canned fish factory at Pesalai was established.

The ice production plant was started in 1981. However, these factories were shut down for 17 years due to terrorist activities.
